My doctoral dissertation seeks to find practical answers to the perennial question “how are moral virtues cultivated?” I address this question by investigating skills that are philosophically and psychologically sound and that can inform how habits can be cultivated over time to form virtuous dispositions. To this end, I argue that emotion-regulation skills found in clinical psychology offer crucial resources that inform how we can
develop moral dispositions, moral motivation, and, in turn, moral virtues. My work concentrates on the moral psychology of the virtues from an Aristotelean and Thomistic perspective and focuses on the virtues of temperance and courage.
